The craziest thing happened a couple months ago. I was at my day job checking my email and I got a message directly from a casting director who I've been trying to develop a solid relationship with for months. It was an email through LA casting to audition for a Hispanic market national commercial. Now I was a little taken a back. I don't self submit on commercials and if my agent submitted me on the audition they would have sent me a message with the audition notification themselves.

So I jumped on the phone and called my agents. I mentioned to them what happened and they knew the commercial I was talking about instantly. My agents let me know they didn't submit me on the commercial because they didn't think I would be right for it. They explained why...which made total sense. In the breakdown the actress needed to look like she could have two teenage sons. And clearly, I don't look like that. Good call on their behalf!

But, I felt I still needed to go to the audition. And I told my agent..."I the CD to know who I am. so, I'm going to go to the audition and make sure she knows me. I just want her to know who I am." And my agent stopped me and kindly reminded me...."she already knows you. She's calling you in. This breakdown was just listed. She probably remembered you and thats why she sent you a message. What you need to do is go there and do your best. That is what she will remember." I felt like an idiot....of course he was right! It instantly changed my perspective on auditions. I know now, if I want them to "know me" I just need to do my best work. And all else will follow.

I've been auditioning for two years and each time I audition, each day, month and year that passes I can say I'm still learning. And this was a valuable lesson to learn.

Once a K-mart Checkout girl...

I have a call back for a national Kmart spot tomorrow. Kinda crazy for me. Four years ago when I moved to LA I began working a second job as a checkout girl for a 24hr Kmart. I really needed the job to pay off my first car, which I had purchased only a couple months earlier. And, I really needed some extra money so that I could finally move to the Hollywood area and be closer to acting jobs! Boy have things changed. I don't even have that first car anymore. And I no longer live in that Hollywood broom closet I wanted so badly to move to back then.

But, I sure can remember spending my Saturday's behind the cash register, day dreaming about possibly being in a Kmart ad campaign one day. I would look at the print ads all over the store, and the television commercials that played throughout the electronics department and just hope that one day those images would be of me. So, Its Kind of awesome having a call back for a national Kmart spot. I mean, how amazing to look back and say I use to work as a check out girl for Kmart and now I'm auditioning for their national commercial!

I'm not sure if I'll book the job, and frankly it doesn't even matter if I do, I'm just grateful these days for the opportunities. But I will admit that the thought of how much my life has changed in such a short period of time made me a little sentimental and I had to share. :)

Film Audition-awkward sexy scene-A First!

This week I had an audition for a film. The main portion of the film with my role involves very intimate dialogue, kissing and touching between myself and my male co-star. Which is a total first for me. But, when I read the script I really enjoyed it. Its z solid story line, dialogue and concept. But, my part involves really sexy moments. no nudity or sex scenes. Just really sexy touching, kissing and dialogue. Based on the directions most of the time the camera will be focused on my face, head and shoulders. so no need for awkward touching or grabbing.

But, I knew in the audition there was a good chance I'd be auditioning with another male actor and their would be an expectation that we touched and maybe even kissed. How do you decide that in a short period of time? A rhythm and movement? With someone you just met? and maybe don't have chemistry with? Oh boy. This is a total first for me! so I prepared the scene to do it alone with just a reader (which I was hoping would be the case) and decided if I was working with another actor what would I be comfortable doing. I focused on my characters intentions, state of mind and love for her man. And just hoped for the best.

On the day of the audition I drove up to the lot and gave security my ID to get my parking pass. As they checked to see if I was on there list I began to panic a little. I stuffed two breath mints in my mouth and checked my lip gloss. lol I just knew I would have to do the scene with another actor. My palms were sweaty and I was sure I would forget all my lines and all the work I did on my character. Thank god in my excitement I got to the audition super early. That gave me time to get my nerves together.

I walked in and the CD was still preparing. (I was the first audition of the day and I was super early) The CD turned to me and said: "you're early, do you want some tea?" And for some reason, with that kind gesture, I just felt calm. About 20 mins later my co-star walked in. A nice guy from the OC. We found a corner in the waiting area and we practiced for a few minutes. It was really awkward. But we did our best. Finally, it was our time to go in and we did our thing. And I totally surprised myself. As soon as the camera turned on I went for it! I just gave it my all and the nerves were not even noticeable. Any awkward moments were easy because I knew how my character felt or would feel in that moment. The audition was quick and I felt good about it. Thank god. I'll count this experience as another good "first."

Call Back: Total Hollywood Moment

Friends!

Oh my god. I had a call back Monday for a national Hispanic commercial promoting one of the Hispanic networks on demand services (trying to be discreet, I'm still technically up for the job). It was my first big call back and a bunch of fun. I love firsts so it was nice to accomplish that.

During the auditions, last week, we were asked to dance a little salsa before we read the copy and that was loads of fun. I had to wear a "sexy dress." so i pulled out my sexy, but tasteful, hot pink spicy number I bought for my birthday last year. And honey dancing in that thing was awesome! Well, during the call backs, this week, we were asked to *not* dance anymore...way to inflate my salsa ego...lol. Instead, we were asked to be "real" and read the copy in our own "voice" like we were chatting with a friend. so I did my thing and here is where my Hollywood moment happened...

Me: (read my copy, did my thing and added a nice funny button to the end)
Director: (honest tone and with a smile) "Giovanni, that was great, just perfect! You have the right idea, beautiful and the camera loves you, just loves you."

Hahaha...no one has ever told me "the camera loves you". I nearly died. Of course, my real first reaction was a nice peek in my ego. lol And then, I thought to myself. "Who says that...?" Now, don't get me wrong, the director was a total sweet heart and he definitely said it in a honest and sweet way. And I don't think he meant to blow smoke up my, you know what. But, it was just so funny. On my drive home, I just kept thinking..."if only the camera were a hot, single and eligible man! I'd be set!" hahaha...

Oh boy, I'm still getting use to the Hollywood moments. so I needed to share. It was a funny and fun experience. And I hope for more. :)

Much love to you friends. I'm on my way to an audition for casting director Cathy Carlton...I have no clue what its for. I'm excited to meet Cathy. Her commercials are awesome. Its a same day audition my agent called me about. But, I'll be sure to share the details when I'm done. :)

Short Girl

Today I went to an audition for a SAG Verizon commercial. The break down my agent sent me was

"Role: Short Girl, 5'2, Pan Hispanic. Focused, energetic and very expressive."

When I arrived to the audition I saw a crowd of 5'10 or above amazonian models. Seriously, these women, many of them, could be in any of the glamorous magazines in America. I was obviously confused. But, the closer I got to the sign in sheet the more I could see a small group of tiny women, all 5'2 (& below) behind the *giant* girls. Clearly, I knew where I belonged. The casting assistant turned to me and said: "short girl?, your paired up with her." I looked up to my partner, a 5'11 giant Brazilian model. All I could do was smile.

lol. Yup, short girl, that's me. :)

Yay! I just signed with Pantheon Talent for commercial and print representation. I'm so excited!

After many months of meetings with, and various inquiries from, top commercial agencies I've finally found a place I'm excited and proud to call home (for commercials, at least!). I'll tell you, it pays to be selective and patient. I'm really happy and looking forward to get to work. :)

I also just began taking meetings with managers, so I'll keep everyone posted when I make a decision.

After the holiday I'll write a post on the comedy short I shot in July. It was so much fun so i'm excited to share.

Wow! I'm so excited to present to you my new blog! You'll note it has a new name: " Mona Lisa In High tops." Which is very appropriate for this wonderful, and sometimes crazy, life I've been writing about. You'll also note at the top of the home page there are new tabs, including an "about me," "Gallery," and "Contact Me" tab. And coming soon there will be a "Reel & clips" tab. So, I hope you enjoy the new layout.

The last few months have gone by really fast and things have changed pretty quickly...but I've been wearing my high tops and getting things done as best as I can. I'm excited to say I've filmed a webisode, a couple scenes for my reel and some short films. YAY! And I'm working on a short this weekend which I'll write all about when I'm done. Also, I'm officially eligible to join the actors union when I'd like. Lastly, I've begun doing workshops with casting directors for film and TV and I'm searching for a theatrical agent. :)

In June I redid my head shots. My goal was to get new pictures that clearly represented my brand and helped to facilitate my new more specific goals. And friends, I'm super happy with the pictures.

These last couple months have been absolutely insane and wonderful at the same time. And quite the whirlwind of emotions. I'm really learning about myself, the people around me and the business I'm in. I feel far more empowered and excited about my life and career then I've ever been.

In the last four months I've starred in a play, worked on a voice-over gig for Wrigley's Juicy Fruit Gum, finished a creative marketing and career co-op with an awesome group of amazing creative folks, auditioned for a bunch of projects (many of which I received call backs for), worked on my reel, finished P90x (woot, woot!) and began taking meetings with agents. I'm getting new head shots next month and taking another Audition technique class. Busy!

A couple weeks ago I spoke to an old college roommate for the first time in years. she was so excited to hear about my adventures in LA and in life. As I was explaining to her about what I'd been up to personally and professionally, she said "wow, you are where I want to be in 2 years." :-o I was so flattered. My college friend is no slacker. she runs a really awesome sweet/baked goods shop in VA and is doing amazingly well as an entreprenuer. To hear her say that was both humbling and exciting. I'm happy that my life (and decisions) are inspiring to others, and most importantly inspiring to those people who inspire me.

After that conversation, I began going over what I'd done (both accomplishments and failures) in the last two years and was so proud of myself. This life ain't easy. But, what stuck me as being so awesome was that I'd taken control of and changed many parts or me and my surrounds for the better. Those things that made me terribly unhappy before are no longer around. I've become far more open with others and much better about my friendships and relationships. And those things I've wanted are no longer "wants" but realities. I stopped waiting for great things to come to me and instead went out and got them and began living.

I won't lie, my life ain't perfect. Nor is it even close. But, I've stopped fighting those things I can't change and began changing those things I can. And, I've accepted so much help along the way to get there! so many awesome people around me keeping me together and accountable. I'd love to thank them all...but most of them like their privacy. :)

so friends, I'm really happy and grateful and ready for more, please.

Wrigley's Juicy Fruit Voice-Over Gig

Hey guys,

I never did get to let everyone know that the Juicy Fruit Voice-Over gig was super fun!

I loved working with director Stephen Goldblatt and producer Ross Girard. They both rocked. And Stephen really allowed me to have fun. I'm not allowed to discuss any details of the voice-over. But, I will let everyone know when it is released. :)

I'm really enjoying doing voice-over work and I'm hoping I'll continue working on voice-over's this year.

Final thoughts on The House of Bernarda Alba

Hello!

Here's a quick blog about my experience working on The House of Bernarda Alba:

First, it was a refreshing challenge to portray the feisty and multi-layered Angustias. It was tons of fun to be mean and have a quick little tantrum in the play. :) But, It was also quite a challenge to find her softer spots and her vulnerable moments. I think I really rose to the challenge and did my best work yet. My intent director (the show was co-directed), also gave me some awesome (positive) feedback about my work & process that I believe I really can use in my future work. So, it was definitely a great experience.

I also learned a couple cool things about myself. For example, I forgot how much I love the rehearsal process. I really enjoy discovering. I think its what makes me unique to most of my peers (in my age group). I really enjoy that time developing a character, exploring the finer points of those elements that make the character unique and amazing. I thrive at developing the character and bringing them alive and I really take advantage of that process. And as a result, I was able to live in the moment on stage with tremendous freedom to enjoy. And I'm all for the "enjoying" part of my work. :)

Also, I found my excitement and gratitude for performing again. I went to the theater everyday so excited and uplifted and ready to work. I was having so much fun. Even a bad day couldn't stand in the way of me going out there and enjoying myself. :) I'm really grateful to have the opportunity to perform for & with others. And I know that came across to my peers.

Lastly, the show had a cast of 18 (mostly women). So I made some solid friendships. And met some people that I know I will continue to keep close to me through out my career. That was a great bonus. :)

Booked: Lorca's The House Of Bernarda Alba

Hey friends!

Awesome news...I booked the role of Angustias in The Underground Theaters Production of Frederico Garcia Lorca's The House Of Bernarda Alba. :0)

I'm really excited. The show is a part of the Theaters 2010 Lorca Fesival. They'll also be producing Blood Wedding, another one of Lorca's great plays.

Frederico Lorca is one of my favorite playwrights so it is a nice way to start the new year. The show is rehearsing for a couple weeks and playing the last two weeks of January. Kinda crazy schedule but I'm still totally excited.

Happy Holiday's friends!

This year has been a wonderful year for me. This past week I spent a great deal of time meditating on the amazing experience's I've had in 2009, both personally and professionally, and It made me feel super grateful for everything and everyone in my life! I've put much thought and planning into 2010 and hope you guys continue to follow me on this wonderful ride!

The Groundlings & Craig Colvin Commercial Class

The Groundlings

I'm done with my first class at The Groundlings improv school. And it was quite the challenge. My instructor, Sean Hogan, was really awesome and the class environment was really safe and nurturing.

Great facts about The Groundlings: all students are encouraged to NOT apologized for any mistakes made in the improv learning process, all students are REQUIRED to clap before and after each students improv work, and the instructor will give everyone adjustments and notes no mater the result of your work. Honestly, these policies helped a lot in feeling comfortable doing the work. I definitely tend to work a lot in my head and try to plan everything. As a result,improv has been much more of a challenge for me.

However, I found that my listening became even better by the end. With improv you absolutely need to listen to, and work off, what your partner gives you. And since you can't plan what your partner is going to contribute to yourimprov scene, and you have no information as to what the plot of your scenes will be or your relationship to your partner i s, all you can do is listen. Boy is that far more difficult then it sounds. I'm so use to working with scripts and established relationships when working on a scene and with a scene partner, I really needed to work hard at just letting go and allowing myself to fail (or succeed). It was nice to see how much I had improved from class one until the end.

I hope to continue on with the next level of improv soon. I really feel it has improved my skills and training in a short time. :)

Craig Colvin commercial audition technique class

Craig's class was awesome! He and Jordana Capra teach the class and they were spectacular to work with! I feel so much more prepared after getting their advice and adjustments. Jordana is an actress who has done over a hundred commercials and has been a commercial audition session director for several years. Her advice and help has been invaluable!

In class, we worked on really getting me to open up and be as big as I can in my delivery and performance. Basically, I need to stop playing it so safe. (It's ok for me to go big and just have the casting director or session director pull me back.) I've always thought of commercials being safer and more contained. So it was interesting to find out that casting directors still prefer to have big, bold and interesting choices from actors.

Aside from really specific and insightful notes on my work, they gave great advice about clothes and makeup. Their note was to go dressed as close as possible to the character you are auditioning for. According to Craig, commercials have moved a great deal to "regular people" selling a product and not "actors playing a character selling a product." So the more you can drop the "hi, I'm an actor playing a part" bit, the better your chances of booking the job.

We also discussed in the first session what our "types" are. According to the class and Jordana and Craig, my type is "blk,white,hispanic, multi-ethnic, Age: 30/35 to 40, middle class to upper middle class." They also gave specifics on what parts would work best for my type:" young mom, business manager, doctor...etc." And last, we went over the potential products I could sell: "Walmart, Mcdonalds, target, and health insurance" to name a few. Such specific advice was super helpful. I feel great about the work we did and the information I learned. It's always great to feel more prepared. And Craig and Jordana are great people to have access to for advice.

I look forward to my next set of classes. More then likely I will begin a new class in March. The next couple of months I'm going to be focusing on getting a commercial agent and marketing myself better. I'll begin working with a career coach starting mid January. So I expect to be making lots of changes as a result of my work with her. But, as usual, I'm excited and pushing forward with a positive outlook. :)

Riunite Spec Spot

So, the spec spot shoot for Ruinite was fantastic Saturday. The director Daniel Ebon was super professional, organized and fun to work with. He had some awesome ideas and really specific directions. An absolutely delightful experience. Also the small cast was awesome to work with. They're really cool actors that I've already began keeping in touch with. :)

Relationship Building
Specking of relationships, this week I received an email from an actress I worked with on the Latino Business Chamber of greater LA spec spot in late October. She wanted to see f I was available to do another on camera spec spot this weekend. Awesome!!! Honestly, she and I only briefly spoke on set and continued to keep in touch via facebook for the last 5 or so weeks. But, I came to mind when she was asked for a referral for another spot. The spot is a PSA for AIDS awareness. Woo hoo... The power of relationship building!!!

Booked & more auditions.

Hola!!!

Hey guys just wanted to bring more great news: I booked another spec spot! Woo Hoo!!! This one is for Riunite wine and I'm the female lead. :) I'm so excited. The spot films this weekend. I'll be sure to let everyone know how things go.

Also, Heather Lynn casting has called me in to audition for another non-union commercial with her office. woo hoo!!! (You guys might recall she called me in for the American Family Insurance print ad for a young mom). This non-union commercial is for Anthem Insurance. Also, this is the second time her office has called me in, in the last 30 days! :)

Things are really well on the film front too. I've had a few auditions in the last couple weeks and another this weekend for an AFI Thesis project. I've seen other AFI thesis projects on the film festival circuit and I've been very impressed with the creativity of the films and the amazing overall productions. So, I'm hoping this one goes well.

Last, I've been feeling amazing the last couple weeks so I wanted to give a quick update and send big hugs and kisses to everyone who has sent positive energy and inspiring words my way.

Hey everyone!

Things have been really great the past couple of weeks so I wanted to give an update.

Last week I went on my first audition for a print commercial. It was for American Life Insurance and they were looking for a "real looking, but attractive" young mom. :) I didn't book the job. But, it was fun getting called in for the audition. Especially since I have no product print experience.

For the audition, I went into the casting directors office and stood against a wall and had 6-10 photos taken of me in multiple positions. I felt like a model. It was weird but interesting. Most of the girls there were very tall and thin and very made up. One lesson I learned: don't take the words "real looking" too seriously on a casting notice. (lol) I basically showed up in my best *young* soccer mom hair, makeup and wardrobe. Which, as most of you know, that's pretty difficult for me. But, I wanted to be prepared. And, I seemed to be the only one who felt that was necessary... Still, I learned. Now I have a better idea of what to do and expect next time.

And today I had a *straight to call back* audition for a Walmart commercial. This is the biggest audition for me thus far and it was excellent! I had more then just fun. It was for a Spanish language commercial for which I submitted my pic to the casting director (Renita Casting, she happens to be one of the casting directors I wanted to target in my drop off/mail in plan I mentioned in my previous blog.) So, it was nice to get called in to read for the casting office and even better to go straight to call backs. It's so weird, but I wasn't nervous at all. And I really should have been. Aside from having a scene partner who has auditioned for and booked many other commercials before, and having multiple casting people in the room, the client (Walmart's Ad agency) was there too! And, some how I was really calm and cool. Like I've been doing this all my life! :)

During the audition the session director came over to my scene partner and I and looked me dead in the eyes and said "you are a very good actress, your partner forgot his line and you recovered the scene flawlessly! Good job!" That was huge! I was ecstatic that my first audition at one of my target casting directors offices went THAT well. And even better: WALMART WAS IN THE ROOM WHEN HE SAID THAT!!!!! That's awesome!

Needless to say, commercials are going well. I'm not getting as many film auditions. But, I'm still submitting and hoping for the best. I did do some featured extra work on a cable network television show this week called party down. That was fun. The show stars Megan Mullally of will and grace fame. And many other recognizable young comedic actors. On television, the days are long and things are crazy. And on this comedy there is alot of improv. And the AD''s seemed to like me (or they liked the pretty cocktail dress I was wearing in my scene) because they put me in many shots. So, I might be noticeable in the episode. The show is on Starz Network for those of you who want to check it out. And I worked on season 2, episode 9. Exhausting, long days, but a really good learning experience.

Now I'm waiting to begin my commercial acting class, which has been postponed to December due to low enrollment. And more then likely I will begin working at the groundlings improvisation school in December as well. I auditioned there early last week and the classes begin the week of Nov 30th. So, December will have many busy nights. But I feel great and more prepared each day.

Commercials & commercial work

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share with you guys that I did my first on camera commercial yesterday.* It was a spec spot for the Latino Business Chamber of greater Los Angeles. And it was so much fun! :) I was featured in multiple shots. So, when I get my hands on a copy of the commercial, I will post it here. (Although, I was told I may not get a copy until late November. So be patient.) The shoot was fun and the people I met were cool. It was nice being on set and getting a chance to work with other actors.

Also, in a couple weeks I'll begin classes with Craig Colvin Casting on Audition Technique. Craig Colvin is one of the most celebrated & accomplished commercial casting directors in LA. He casts both non-union and union commercials and commercials in both English and Spanish. And he has cast hundreds of commercials, as well as film, TV, print and voice overs. So, with his class I'll continue with my top notch LA training. (so much too learn...and I'm ready for it!) So excited!

I'm ready to learn about commercials. And I'm happy I'll be going into class with two commercials already under my belt (one V/O and now one on camera). I learned a lot yesterday. So I have lots of questions. :) I also learned so much from the commercial audition process. I was really nervous. I had to read in English and Spanish for the spot. And I've never auditioned for an on camera commercial before! Thank god I'd read up on commercials and I knew what they were asking me when they said "slate your name," for example. Which is basically saying your name into the camera. But, of course, things are never as simple as they seem. And I'd read, on backstage.com, tips from commercial casting directors on how to *slate* well. So, that may or may not have helped. But, I wanna be able to audition for national campaigns soon so learning and becoming a competitive option to casting directors is important to me. I'm I get some solid information from Craig Colvin.

My New *commercial* plan/strategy

So, I've decided to shift my focus (almost full time) to finding a commercial agent, building my commercial resume and developing and *nurturing* relationships with commercial casting directors. I believe this is the best way to take control of some part of this big and sometimes daunting business while also keeping my sanity.

To accomplish this plan: I'll begin taking commercial acting classes (which include improv too). After Craig Colvin's class, I have two other classes in mind. All considered to be the best commercial classes in LA and all taught by currently working commercial casting directors. This will help me to begin establishing relationships with casting directors while also learning the ropes from the pros. Also, when I can, I'll take workshops facilitated by commercial casting directors to get an idea of what the casting directors, who would hire my type, are looking for.

In addition, I opened a LACasting account, which is where the union and non-union commercials are posted (aside from breakdowns...which agents and managers only have access too). Through LACasting I've been submitting myself for spec spots, non-union and union commercials. I'm really on top of this part... so I know something will pan out soon. This will also help in the *building my resume/reel* area.

As I'm doing all of the above, I'll also begin self submitting directly to commercial casting offices, and doing drop offs directly to offices starting next week and every other Friday there after. I luckily live a few blocks from many commercial casting director offices (most are on la brea in west Hollywood). So this part should be fine.

And finally, I'm writing cover letters and putting packages together to submit to commercial agents. I've done my research and decided on a short list of respected agents I think I'd be happy with. (I've read: that it's important to be specific with this part, do your research and chose wisely where you wanna sign).

In the meantime, I've also been submitting myself to films to build my film resume, auditioning for whatever I get called in for, taking classes at Margie Haber's studio, working out at 24 hour fitness 5 days a week, reading several books on the industry that came recommended to me and looking for a day job in this wonderful recession. I'll continue to do this for the next few months, then I'll begin my TV and film strategy, which I'll share with you guys soon.

So, as you might imagine, I'm busy. But, I'm also very happy. I've surrounded myself by positive, working artist and I, continue to just be positive and work on myself spiritually, physically and artistically.

A funny thing happened on the way to me trusting...

Tonight I went back to class and re-did the SCRUBS audition. I took my teacher Zak's advice (see TRUST blog) and I had fun! And I rocked!!! Zak was beyond impressed. He told me it was my best work. I was funny and interesting. And that, that *something* that had been missing from my work was there. He could tell I let go and it made me really shine. My peers were also impressed. One of my class buddies, who is a comedian with stand up experience at the Comedy Store, told me my audition was "funny" and "the best performance of anyone in the class."

I'm beyond satisfied that I took difficult advice and I made a positive change and turned things around for myself successfully. Honestly, I just pushed my fears and insecurities aside and did my best. I know I still have work to do. But, I feel so much stronger and more confident now. And I'm ready to have fun and discover more. Also, I'm ready to *book.* So, bring on those auditions. :)

After the SCRUBS scene we did another cold reading mock audition and again I successfully opened up and was vulnerable. Zak told me it was great to see me let go and succeed. He was so involved in my *focus* and *vulnerability* that he didn't care about my *objective.* That, that *something* was there, again.

For me that was awesome because we work on that last cold reading for no more than 20 minutes. Whereas, with the SCRUBS re-do, I worked over night on my mock audition. That showed me that I'm able to bring that *something*even if I don't have two days to work on an audition. :)

Now that my class with Zak is over, he and I had a short discussion about my next step at the studio. He gave me permission to move on to the next level. Or now stay with him for another month of "on going class," which is basically a four week class to try to continue working on preparing for the next level. His permission to move forward is important because its rare for students to move to the next level this quickly. But Zak believes I have what it takes to handle the next level.

I'm torn because on the one hand I'm flattered that Zak trusts and believes in me. And I know I still need to work on getting out of my way and trusting myself. But, I'm also so excited to work with Eden Harman Bernardy, the intermediate instructor. Her resume is beyond impressive and her list of current & previous students is mid boggeling.

But ultimately I might be doing a disservice to myself and my training if I make the wrong decision. I have until Sunday to decide. I'll take the weekend to think about it.

TRUST

Tonight was my second to last class at Margie Haber studios, It was a difficult one, and a bit more emotional than I had anticipated.

It all began with a cold read of a couple scenes from the comedic television show SCRUBS. Generally, I dislike performing comedy as an actor because I usually don't get it. So, these scenes were definitely a big challenge for me. But, I did my best in the 30minutes I had to prepare and went for the challenge.

After I read for Zak on tape we discussed my performance with my peers. I shared with them that I totally dislike performing comedy and felt super uncomfortable doing it. My peers all sighed and looked at me in total disbelief. Most of them said they thought I did a really good job and that it was absolutely unnoticeable on tape that I "didn't know what I was doing." My teacher Zak also chimed in and gave positive feed back, sharing that he felt my transitions were good and my performance was good. But he still felt I was holding back. My *need,* needed to be stronger. But with a little work my performance and interpretation would be even better. I was a bit disappointed. I'd really wanted to do better than just *good.* Although, I was satisfied that I'd tried something I didn't understand (and feared) and still succeeded at doing relatively well with it. However, this wasn't the first time Zak had been happy with my performance and growth but dissatisfied that *something* was missing.

So today I decided to speak to Zak after class and ask for advice, I thought maybe he could give me some clear exercises to improve my weak *objective* and bring that *something* missing into my performance. And improving on my craft is my goal and therefore I'm always receptive to advice.

After class I went to chat with Zak in his office, away from my peers and there is where he gave it to me straight: "Giovanni you are a very talented actress. Today your scene was very good. You were one of two or three people, in a class of 13, who got the scene. I don't want this to be misinterpreted, but, right now I see you as one of those actresses that always gets a callback but never books the job." Having been a bit burned by his words I asked for advice, exercises, something to change this. And then he continued: "I don't think it's a technical thing with you. You know your technique. You can break down a scene and build a character. You are a very prepared and studied actress. And it's not a lack of talent, that's there too. You are lacking an emotional level to your work. You are not trusting yourself and it shows and its weakening your work."

I knew what he was talking about. I'd seen this already in myself. I wasn't *trusting* my abilities or *trusting* myself. But, I was still hit hard by his words. Tears began to well up in my eyes and I began to break. He didn't realize I would get teary eyed so he stopped for a minute. I told him that I knew that was a problem and I'd been working on it. He looked at me honestly and said: "Well, thats what you have to work on. That's what needs to change to get you to the next level in your work. Just let go and *trust* yourself. You have it, the talent, the technique now just have more fun. *Trust* that you know what you are doing, because you do."

Wow, that was rough. I'd hoped the work i'd been doing on myself for the last couple years had begun working. But, my insecurities and fears were clear to him. I wish i could say that my journey as an actress thus far has been all about scripts, characters, auditions, booking and training. But it hasn't. Its also been about vulnerabilty, insecurities, fears and most importantly about Trust. Trusting myself, trusting my abilities and being vulnerable.

Some days are easier than others, tonight was eye opening. I'm doing my best and all I can do is that. I asked Zak to push me more, challenge me more and that I'd do the same. It's not easy but It was necessary.

Generally I frown upon being overly emotional and crying infront of others when getting feedback about work. But, I trust Zak, so I allowed myself to be vulnerable in that moment. It was hard

But it was unintentionally my first step toward Trusting myself. I like to think those tears where tears of joy...I've been found out and now it's time to work.

Margie Haber Studios Training (half way point)

So I'm at the halfway point with my training at Margie Haber studios. Thus far things are solid. I feel confident in my training and I believe my abilities have advanced immensely. Mission accomplished. I still have work to do. But I'm at a whole other place right now. And of course I have my teacher Zak Barnett to thank for that!

When I think back about the first day of class I realize how much I've advanced during these last two weeks. Zak told me last night that I've made leaps and bounds in my performance. That my work is at a whole new place. Working with Zak and reading Margie's book: How to get the part without falling apart has fed my preparation (and my brain) a great deal. I focus more on my *preparation,* and on allowing myself to *listen* and *trust* in the other person working with me (casting director) which has also allowed me to give up a great deal of *control.* Honestly, I think I'm a really good listener but in the casting room I'm so busy focusing on *acting* and giving a "great" performance that I ignore the other person working with me. I become very ego driven and therefore: fall on my face. :(

Margie Haber's book, and Zak's guidance have really helped me understand myself and my preparation in a realistic way. Our sessions thus far have focused on the relationships in the scene and on NOT *acting* and instead, living the life of the person we're portraying. Zak keeps requesting of me to bring more of my *personality* to my work and to stop trying to control my performance. Basically, he believes if I've *prepared* strong images and back story that offer clues to the life of the person (character) then, I should be able to *trust* my preparation and give in to the moment to moment actions in the casting directors office. Thus, giving up *control* and allowing myself the freedom to reveal (and experience) different moments each time I audition while still allowing my *preparation* to assist me.

Hardcore stuff, right? But I'm getting it more and more each class. Not being in control isn't easy. But, being vulnerable is a part of the job. So I'm finding my way.

Things on the home front are good. I'm making every effort to spend a minimum of 40 hours a week on my career and training. As you might imagine this requires lots of late nights and early mornings. But, its important to me to treat my career like a career and not a hobby. And, I have goals to reach and jobs to book! ;) Right now I'm focusing on a commercial audition technique class and getting a commercial agent as soon as I can. I'll keep you guys posted on both. :)

Still no day job. But I'm looking everyday and interviewing when requested. My interviews are always solid...but still no job offers. :( Something will happen soon.

I'm also looking for a new apartment. It might be time for me to move. I'm still weighing my options on this. We'll see.

I believe in my heart everything is lining up in my favor and things will work themselves out.

Margie Haber Studios and LA Life

Hey Everyone!

I'm so excited to share with you about my first night back to school as a student, in over 5 years! Tonight was my first day of class at the Margie Haber Studio in West Hollywood. It was so much fun! I was so excited and nervous before hand...but it turned out to be great!

For those of you who don't know Margie Haber, her studio is considered by many in the industry as the *go to* place to work on cold readings and audition technique. She's written a successful acting book called How to get the part without falling apart, and, she's worked with some awesome actors over the years, including; Halle Berry and Brad Pitt, to name a few.

So, as you might imagine, classes at her studio are popular and always full! But, I was determined and relentless to get a space in one of the classes...and I succeeded! I'm so happy I did. Tonight was great. I was working with other actors on character breakdowns, character relationships and back stories...and all of those things I'd begun to miss working on. I feel more confident now that I'm working on the *craft* again. The class is 5 hours long, twice a week for the next four weeks. So, it's a lot of work! But, I can see from today's class that it will be well worth it.

Aside from my new class, I've also had a few auditions in the last month. I've gotten some cool opportunities to read for a few casting directors, including one of the casting directors with the local Spanish language station and I've even read for a couple film projects. But, I've also been really selective on what I've submitted myself for. I kinda wanted to wait a bit to begin my class at the Haber studio because I honestly wanted to avoid reading for the *right* person at the *wrong* time. Although, I've been really lucky to get some strong feedback about my head shots and my previous experiences and the couple screen tests I've had. It's been nearly 4 years since my last acting gig. So, I want to wait until I feel more prepared. And after tonight, I'm happy I did that. Working with other actors today, and a solid teacher guiding us, really helped me to begin to dust off my acting wings. :)

August was a pretty hectic month. But, I'm not complaining. I'm just happy I'm busy again. I also spent much of last month on some solid job interviews. Although, I'm still unemployed. :(

I am getting *awesome* feed back about my resume and previous experiences...but, still no job offers...? Not sure what it is. I can only imagine that my desire and passion for acting is beginning to show. There were many days I was running from an audition, to a job interview then right over to another audition. So, who knows? I'm still sending out resumes as much as I can. And asking friends, especially other actors, for help in the job search. I'm sure something will come through soon. I have faith. :)

I feel really good about where things are for me right now. I've been focusing on spending time on me lately, and hanging out with my close friends and building on those relationships. My very best friend Nick is coming to visit for a week! YAY! He'll be here tomorrow.

Robit, my neighbor and dear friend, has been amazing too. (Check out this pic of us at the Santa Monica Pier this weekend.) He's like the big brother I've never had! He keeps me smiling! We've been going everywhere around town on his motorcycle and enjoying the summer. Aside from our cool friendship, we share a mutual love of food! He's like my family away from home. :)

It's been nice to focus on me and the next chapter of my journey. Until next time, Ciao.

HollyShorts Film Festival 2009

I had such an eventful weekend. I got to see some solid short films, network with awesome filmmakers and hang out with my amigas from the east coast (all soon to be re-located to the left coast). :)

On Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending the opening night red carpet & ceremony of The HollyShorts Film Festival at the Directors Guild of America. It was so much fun! Opening night was dedicated to the work of cinematographer Darren Lew. (He is a well respected film and commercial cinematographer.) In addition to presenting Mr Lew with an award, the festival screened three of his most recent short films; "Streak," Directed by Demi Moore, "Welcome," Directed by Kirsten Dunst and "Bug Crush," Directed by Carter Smith. All three films were really good. And as a bonus there was a Q&A with the directors and the Cinematographer after the screenings. It was fascinating to hear Demi Moore, who is stunning in person, discuss her set backs and triumphs as an independent short film director. And it was mind boggling to hear Kirsten Dunst tell the story of how she lost her crew and location (and got them all back) all on the first day of shooting. Ah independent filmmaking! :)

After the screenings we were able to mingle with other filmmakers at an awesome private cocktail party. It was so nice to be around people who are making films and creating art. I really felt recharged this weekend. I've even begun working on the concept for my next short film. (so excited, will inform more soon.) We did take lots of Pictures at the after party. So, as soon as I get my hands on those, I will post them! :)

And then on Saturday I returned to the festival to attend Jason Cuadrados short film Monstrous Nature. Jason and I met recently through a mutual friend, Tracy Perez. The film is a werewolf horror flick. I really enjoyed it and was happy I attended the screening. While there, I had another opportunity to chat with other filmmakers and share stories about short filmmaking and making the difficult move from NY based filmmaker to LA based filmmaker. :)

To top off the wonderful weekend, I went to the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday to see Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang perform in concert. Their performances were really moving and inspiring. But they had a special guest that made my night! Josh Grobin came on stage and sang while Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang played along! I was moved to tears by the performance. :)

This summer has been amazing! And I would not have had anything go any other way. I feel so blessed and inspired right now.

The rest of the month seems to be pretty exciting too. I have a couple of other film screenings to attend and I'm hosting a dinner party for some friends to help get me back on track to feeling like my old self. :)

Johnny Moment (Rough Cut) Online

So, I'm excited to let everyone know that Johnny Moment is now online!!!

As many of you already know, Johnny moment is the first short film I produced almost 10 years ago. Producing Johnny Moment was what made me want to make movies! The process was rough, frustrating and extremely difficult. But it was also exciting and creative and those feelings left me wanting more. Being able to see (and share) the film online in a rough cut all these years later is super cool and definitely fulfilling.

Jaded filmmakers

Feeling jaded is a hot subject for many independent filmmakers. I myself have felt a bit of cynicism toward the “business” and acting and producing at one time or another. However, I’ve never honestly felt jaded. I keep telling myself its because I'm young and still fairly new to things. Certainly I'm new to filmmaking itself. So, maybe after a few rough years in the biz I’ll feel jaded too...? (but I hope not.)

After a recent conversation with a self proclaimed "jaded" filmmaker I began thinking about this topic more. I couldn't get out of my head for a couple days that this filmmaker could so easily state that she was jaded. (and to be fair to her, she's not the first filmmaker I've met that has owned up to that so quickly). But, that's when I began wondering: why do these jaded filmmakers stick it out and make more films? I would think a healthy dose of cynicism and indifference about anything for an extended time would make a person run away or move on. Right? I mean, if your “jaded,” where do you find inspiration to make films? What keeps you going? Will all these jaded filmmakers dry up one day like little raisins in the sun?

That evening, I kept thinking to myself, god, I hope I don't feel this way one day. Because no one wants to be around a jaded filmmaker. I want to feel inspired and excited, not just by the films we make but by the filmmakers who make them. I know that being an independent filmmaker is certainly not always fun. It often requires a great deal of work, discipline and ingenuity. And often the tangible rewards are few and far in between. But, I still believe we owe it to ourselves, and to our talent, to remain fresh, optimistic and enthusiastic about our work. (even if no one else is)

Of course, being an out of work (and broke) filmmaker is definitely not helping my enthusiasm for filmmaking these days. There are some days I wake up and I wanna poke my eye out for choosing such a crazy path in life. Damn it! I’m smart and hard working, I could have gone to law school and secured a job at a really awesome New York law firm, and made bank. (I know that wouldn't make me happy but its crossed my mind. )

Honestly, I don't know the answers to all my questions about jaded filmmakers. I don't really know how they find the inspiration to make their next film. But, as I think about new and interesting ways to make rent money for next month, I continue to try to inspire myself to stay optimistic and excited about my work (& my future work). I've done so by watching my favorite movies, working on monologues and looking up film trivia, thinking of new ideas for future films and reading the works & biographies of other filmmakers. But mainly optimism has become my new mantra. I'm hoping the crazy pace of things doesn't prematurely burn me out. I'll just have to keep my spirits up and my enthusiasm in tack. :)

Update...

Hola!

It's been a month since I last blogged and some really important things have recently happened that I must share!

First, I went to New York to see my family (my mom, grandma and sister) and enjoy time with my friends. Yay!!! Also while there I got the chance to see my younger sister Angelic graduate from college! AWESOME! (yes, yes...the Cortez sisters are fabulous and intelligent! ;p). And while in NY I went sightseeing, stopped by the old neighborhood to visit family and childhood friends and I ate like a crazy girl! I ate nearly the entire time I was there! New York has the best food and so much yummy Puerto Rican food. So, I just ate everything in sight! LOL I've been running and working out ever since I got back to burn off all that cuchifrito (Puerto Rican soul food). My trip was great!

Second, I returned to LA to deal with being "laid off" from work. That sucked!!! It was a really weird experience. I was both happy and scared when I was told the news. Happy because it was absolutely time for me to leave that job and scared to be a new member of the "unemployed." Everything happens for a reason, right? And this is no exception. Now I really need to kick it up a notch and work harder! I know that what doesn't kill me will only make me stronger! :)

Third, Replay is online now!!! You guys must watch it. Go to: www.stopchasingme.com. It has been two plus years since we filmed it and its great to be able to direct people straight to the website to see it. I hope you enjoy it! Finally, while I was away, I missed LA so much. Really! So weird. Me! The big New Yorker missed LA. Now don't get me wrong, New York will always have a special place in my heart, but LA is my home now. :)

Hello Everyone!!!

WOW!

This was so easy. Hard to believe you can set up a blog this easy. That's great!

Okay. So I set up this blog to create a place where friends & family (and total strangers if they're interested) can come check out updates on my acting and movie making career in LA.

Its been about two years and 4 months since I moved from NY to LA and the time has gone by super fast and things have changed immensely for me. But the experience has really been great thus far.

Personally I have made leaps and bounds to make the necessary changes in my life to get to where I want to be at this point (I know, I know...a bit cryptic but I'll elaborate more in future blogs...Promise!).

And professionally I've gotten great opportunities that have changed me for good. But I still feel a bit dissatisfied with where I am. So, I've decided to crank up the heat and work even harder this year to get closer to my goals.

And I'd like to invite everyone along to share in on this journey with me. So fasten your seat belts because this is going to be a bumpy ride. :)

Giovanni Cortez is a Los Angeles based actress and producer. Originally from Spanish Harlem, New York, she began her acting career at the age of 14. She attended the Professional Performing Arts High school in Manhattan and soon after began professional work in Off-Off-Broadway productions, including work with the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre. In 2000, just a few weeks after her high school graduation and at the young age of eighteen, Giovanni produced her first short film Johnny Moment. After producing this action filled independent short film she knew she wanted to continue to pursue projects as both an actress and a producer. In 2004 she received her Bachelors degree in Theatre at Grinnell College and in 2007 she moved to Los Angeles to pursue more opportunities in film. Since her move to LA, along with writer-director-producer Reynier Molenaar, she produced the award winning short film Replay. This 5 minute independent short film, shot entirely on location in Los Angeles and Venice Beach, has won multiple awards on the film festival circuit including Best action film at the Malibu International Film Festival and the 24fps Short film festival. Since her career beginnings, Giovanni has had the privilege to work with, or study under, actor-director Alejandro Furth, Broadway director Rajendra Maharaj (A Raisin in the Sun, Rebel Theatre), writer-director-producer Reynier Molenaar and writer-director Brian Zarin (The Calm at the Edge of the Sea), among others.
